Port of Hong Kong throughput reverts to negative growth

After two months of positive box throughput growth (May/June) the Port of Hong Kong saw container numbers drop again in July. Total box throughput in July was 1,088m teu reflecting 1.6% fewer containers compared to July 2025.

Drilling down into the figures the Kwai Tsing terminals just managed to stay in positive territory by handling 823,000 teu for a 0.6% edge over the figures for the same period last year. However, midstream operators more than nullified the Kwai Tsing figures by handling 265,000 teu, reflecting a short fall of 7.8% compared to July 2025.

The cumulative total throughput for the first seven months of the year stands at 7.421m teu, 3.4% fewer boxes than during the same period last year.
