Hong Kong Shipowners Association seeks Director (Regulatory Affairs)

The Association

The Hong Kong Shipowners Association is a major trade organization in Hong Kong, with a strong international presence. We promote our members’ interests, support Hong Kong as a global maritime centre, and serve as a respected voice for the shipping industry.

Primary role

The Director (Regulatory Affairs) monitors the development of, and lobbies for the Association’s position in, manning, legal, insurance and other regulatory issues that may affect the shipping industry.

Key responsibilities

  • Keep abreast of relevant manning, legal, insurance, and other regulatory topics. Ensure that sensible advice is given to Association members as and where appropriate.
  • Organise conferences, workshops, and seminars for educational or professional exchange purposes, in light of the needs and concerns of the industry.
  • Participate in the formulation of, and debates on, policies, rules and regulations.
  • Initiate and conduct research studies for the benefit of Association members.
  • Represent the Association on boards and in committees at the local, regional and international level
  • Serve as the subject officer and the secretary of the relevant Association’s committees and working groups.
  • Act as the coordinator for the Association on IT matters.

Requirements

This is a challenging position with wide exposure. The right candidate must have a passion for the shipping industry, with the capacity to understand and articulate on a wide range of subjects and their potential impact on different industry stakeholders.

Specifically, the candidate is expected to have the following qualities:

  • Substantial experience in regulations and/or the application of regulations from a ship owner’s viewpoint, with the knowledge to identify issues that are or will be of concern to Association members.
  • Analytical capability to digest developments, with the ability to draft briefing notes, research reports, project proposals and policy papers for the Association.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English, with good presentation skills to contribute positively at internal meetings and public forums.
  • A proven track record of performance and achievements.

Committee work experience and proficiency in Chinese would be added advantages.
